Why August of Junior Year Is the Perfect Time to Start SAT Prep

If you're heading into junior year, you’ve probably heard that this is the year when things really start to matter for college. One of the biggest pieces of the college admissions puzzle? Standardized testing—especially the SAT (or ACT).

So, when should you begin preparing?
Our advice at Weil College Advising: Start in August of junior year. Here’s why.

1. You’re Fresh and Focused

After a (hopefully!) restful summer, August is the perfect time to set goals and build strong habits before the school year gets too busy. Starting early helps reduce stress and gives you time to pace your preparation without it interfering with your schoolwork or extracurriculars.

2. You’ll Be Ready for the First Real Test Dates

The SAT is offered multiple times during the school year, and the best approach is to prepare consistently throughout the fall and take your first official SAT in December or March. With solid prep, you can then schedule a second test date in spring to improve your score if needed. This gives you flexibility and time to fine-tune your test-taking strategy, without feeling rushed.

3. You’re Building on Stronger Math and Reading Skills

By junior year, you’ve covered most of the math and reading concepts that appear on the SAT. You’re in a great spot to sharpen your skills, focus on strategy, and target your weaknesses—without feeling overwhelmed by unfamiliar material.

4. You’ll Free Up Time for College Apps Later

Junior spring and senior fall can be incredibly busy with APs, finals, extracurriculars, and college applications. By getting your SAT out of the way early (or at least making major progress by winter), you’ll relieve some serious pressure down the road.

5. Colleges Are Still Paying Attention to Test Scores

Even in the test-optional world, good scores still help. They can boost your application, qualify you for merit scholarships, and help you stand out at more selective schools. Prepping early gives you the best chance to hit your target scores.
